## What are alternate audio tracks?

> [!WARNING]
> **Compatibility note:** Supported on DIVA 5.2 on Android and Apple onwards.

Alternate audio tracks represent the sound that accompanies a video stream. Audio tracks and video streams exist as separate entities. Given multiple audio tracks are available within the loaded video, DIVA supports audio track selection.

Operators can choose to specify a particular audio track for a video via APIs.

### Does the Audio and Subtitles icon always appear?

No, the audio and subtitles icon is dynamic, meaning if an audio track selection is available, the icon appears. If an audio track selection is not available, the icon is **not** visible.

The audio and subtitles icon supports three states:

| State | Icon | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Default | ![Audio and subtitles icon - default.png](https://cdn.document360.io/2e698e3c-4773-44a4-9476-1d05bac85eee/Images/Documentation/6129942808604.png) | No audio track is applied to the video |
| Hover | ![Audio and subtitles icon - hover.png](https://cdn.document360.io/2e698e3c-4773-44a4-9476-1d05bac85eee/Images/Documentation/6129959864220.png) | The icon displays a tooltip when hovered over |
| Active | ![Audio and subtitles icon - active.png](https://cdn.document360.io/2e698e3c-4773-44a4-9476-1d05bac85eee/Images/Documentation/6129943710236.png) | An audio track is applied to the video |

💡 To learn about Subtitles and Closed Captions, read our [subtitles and captioning](/v1/docs/subtitles-and-captioning) article.

### Can the audio track selection be changed?

Yes, if enabled, users can change the video's audio track if alternate options exist - changes made apply for the duration of the DIVA session.

Audio track options reflect those available in the video stream. The selection saves locally and applies when loading subsequent videos. If an audio track does not exist for a newly selected video, a default audio track (configurable by an operator) is selected.
