This article introduces badges and explains how and where they can be used on assets.
Minimum version requirements: Text badge scheduling is introduced in AXIS 9.6. The ability to apply a custom color theme is available from AXIS 9.7 and Reference Apps 6.8 on Responsive web and WebTV, Android and Android TV, Apple, and 6.9 on Roku.
What are text badges?
Text badges allow you to create text that displays on asset tiles via the asset metadata. Use text badges to highlight or add context to an asset within specific rows. For example, add a ‘Best actor nominee’ text badge to a persona asset, or ‘League champions’ to a team asset to draw attention to the asset's features. Alternatively, a ‘Just added’ text badge applied to a Movie or Show asset engages users and aids the discovery of newly added content. An ‘Exclusive’ text badge lets users know they won't find this content elsewhere.
What do text badges look like?
By default, text badges appear with black text on a yellow/gold background:
. They typically display above the asset title, and are responsive, adjusting in both size and position as the screen size changes.
Note: It's worth noting here the distinction between text badges that are manually added to an asset — which is what we discuss in this article — and the pre-configured labels that are automatically generated based on an asset's schedule and the current time (Live, Upcoming, and so on). The latter can't be added and removed in Presentation Manager but are defined during the system set-up.
It’s also important to not confuse text badges with the image type of Badge.
The first image below shows an ‘Exclusive’ badge that's been added to an Event Hero row. This sits alongside an automatically generated Live Now! label.
In the second image, a row features assets with ‘Just Added’ and ‘Season 2 Available’ text badges displayed.

How do I add a text badge to my asset?
Note: By default, Presentation Manager only supports text badges. If you want to display an image badge — for example, to overlay a brand image logo on your asset — some customization will be required.
To display a text badge on an asset, in Presentation Manager:
Navigate to the asset catalog (ASSETS > Items) and select the relevant asset.
With Metadata selected in the left-hand navigation, the Badge field can be seen just above Short Description.
Enter the required badge text into the field (20-character limit).
Select Save and Update to save your changes and immediately display the text badge on supported rows and devices.

The first image below shows badge text entered on a movie asset in Presentation Manager. The second is the corresponding badge displayed on the asset tile on an H1 Hero row in the Responsive web app.

How do I apply a text badge color theme?
The ability to apply custom color themes to text badges was introduced in AXIS 9.7. Once a set of custom themes has been set up for your environment, they're available for you to select and apply to a text badge.
To apply a theme:
Enter the badge text.
As soon as text is entered (and assuming custom themes are available), the Color theme section is activated.
To change the pre-populated Default theme, open the drop-down.
Predefined themes are listed, alongside a color preview of how the badge will appear.
Select the theme you want. It will appear in the Color theme section with the preview displayed.

How do I schedule a text badge?
From AXIS 9.6 you have the ability to schedule text badges. This means you can ensure that a badge is displayed on an asset for the required period, without having to update it in real time.

To schedule a text badge:
Select Add Timeframe within the text badge section.
The schedule window opens, defaulting to the current local date and time for both Timeframe start and Timeframe end.
Enter or select the new date and time that you want for the badge.
Select Confirm to close the schedule window.
Select
to save your scheduled badge.

The timeframe set displays under the badge field, and apps automatically display the text badge on the asset tile (on supported rows) during the specified period.

Once the set timeframe expires, the text badge is no longer visible in the apps, and the timeframe in Presentation Manager resets to the default.
To edit the visibility schedule for the text badge, simply select on Edit Timeframe to make changes.
Any text badges with a schedule that has expired (or hasn't yet been reached) will be excluded from search results.
Read more about the scope of Enhanced Search, which has the ability to return results from multiple asset fields, including badge text.
No Timeframe set?
If you add a text badge without adding a timeframe, then the text badge displays in the apps as soon as you save and update the asset page. It remains visible until you remove it.
Note: Text badge color themes and scheduling can only be applied and edited on the default metadata tab — i.e., not on variants. Where additional language variants exist, they'll read and apply the format and schedule that exists on the default variant. Newly added variants also inherit text badge properties from the default metadata variant. It's not currently possible to configure text badges on a per-variant basis.
Which rows support text badges?
Support for text badges varies by row type and by device. Check out our row types articles for more details and to see examples of how text badges appear on applicable device types.
