Asset metadata

Prev Next

This article details the metadata fields available for each asset type, and indicates which ones are mandatory.

What is asset metadata?

Asset metadata provides contextual information for your assets. Some metadata fields can be called through the AXIS API, while many are visible in the Apps (depending on the row type and configuration).

Most sports and entertainment asset types have metadata populated as part of the ingestion workflow. For custom assets, which are created manually in Presentation Manager, metadata needs to be added directly to the asset. Whether ingested or added manually, metadata fields can subsequently be edited.

Asset metadata - Episode asset.png

AXIS Presentation Manager 10.0

AXIS 10 enhancements within the asset metadata side tab:

  1. We have added the Channel name above the variants (for Channel assets only). This is in addition the the existing Title. The channel name is not used in the apps, but is used to identify the channel within Presentation Manager. This is displayed in the top section of the Metadata tab, above the language variants.
Metadata section showing channel name input and language selection options.

  2. ID and Slug visibility: Fields showing the ID and Slug of the asset are now available. These are displayed in all types of assets in the asset metadata, beneath the Title, within the Default language variant. They are unique to the page and are not available to edit. Each field has a copy icon to the right of it, to make it easier to paste the information elsewhere. This is in addition to displaying the asset ID in the header.
Metadata fields for the title, ID, and slug of 'The Wire' displayed on screen.

  3. Episode order: Configure the episode list ordering in the asset metadata (only available for the Show asset type) to display episodes by:

    1. Episode number (Ascending) - Oldest to Newest, i.e. starting at the first available season, first episode - this is the default setting

    2. Episode number (Descending) - Newest to Oldest, i.e. starting at the last available season, last episode

    3. Date offered (Newest first) - using the Offered date of the Episodes

    4. Date offered (Oldest first) - using the Offered date of the Episodes
Dropdown menu displaying episode order options for sorting content effectively.

This  can also be configured on the Show detail page, although it is overridden by any selection made in asset metadata.

  4. Image badges: These display on the bottom-right of asset tiles on body rows and above the title in Hero rows. Image badges are available for all asset types except Links. The are configured with Text badges in the Badge section in the asset metadata.
Badge configuration options including text, color theme, and schedule settings.

Custom fields

In addition to the specific fields included by default for specific asset types (above), there are also custom fields that can be further added to any item asset type.

Note: Custom fields do not have restrictions, which means that all custom fields are available to be added to all asset types. However, if a custom field is only applicable to certain asset types, while the field can be added and saved to any asset’s data, the Apps only take notice of the information if the custom field has been added to a relevant asset type, otherwise it is ignored.

Custom fields are wide ranging. Below are some specific custom fields that are useful in specific situations:

To specify whether or not an asset is downloadable

To support the Download feature, the custom field Can Download can be added to Asset metadata in Presentation Manager, where it can be set to Yes or No. This means that the ability to choose whether an individual asset can be downloaded can be configured after ingestion.

Add Can Download in the Custom Fields section of the Internal Properties box at the bottom of the page.

  • Field name - Can Download

  • Value - Yes/No

The ability to download an asset is only useful for playable asset types, so this custom field should only be added to Movies, Episodes, Programs, Trailers, and Events.

Note: As is often the case with amending data after ingestion, if an asset is re-ingested, this field is overwritten, so it is standard practice to specify whether an asset is downloadable before ingestion. Only use this field when absolutely necessary to change the downloadable status of a specific asset. If this Custom field is not added, the asset will simply use the download setting applied prior to ingestion.
